Week II

 

The Grammar translation Method

As it was the first week of classes Lic. Orlando used the first class of the week to show us the study plan for the subject and the different activities we’ll do throughout the semester. On the second class, we started to see the different teaching methods.

The first method that we were able to see was the grammar translation method. This method was born thanks to the classical teaching method of the foreign languages such as Latin and Greek. We learned why this method is important and its characteristics:

*Classes are taught in the mother tongue.

*Much vocabulary is taught in the form of lists with isolated words.

*Little or no attention is given to pronunciation.

*Difficult test are used at the beginning of the learning process.

*Long, elaborated explanations of the intricacies of grammar are given.

At the end of the class we went over the strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, and threats of this teaching method. And with that the content of the class was provided and further instructions for next week were provided.
